Ukrainian farmers start spring sowing despite political unrest

Despite the unsettling situation in the country, Ukrainian farmers have started planting spring crops throughout the areas of 46.6 thsd ha, declared Ihor Shvaika, newly-appointed Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.

He also mentioned that agrarians provided additional fertilizing of winter grains throughout 3.42 mln ha, or 44% of the plan. The condition of winter crops throughout the areas of 7.3 mln ha (93%) is estimated as good and satisfactory, 0.5 mln ha (7%) - weak and thinned.

Furthermore, Minister said that in the current year Ukraine will plant spring crops throughout 18.5 mln ha (excluding the possible replanting works), including grains - 8.6 mln ha (early grains - 2.9 mln ha), technical crops - 7.3 mln ha (sugar beet - 361 thsd ha, sunflower seed - 4.3 mln ha).
